Cancer & Hair Loss

Not always the easiest topic to discuss with your doctor or stylist. But over 30 million women in the US alone suffer abnormal hair loss due to a variety of different reasons such as chemo therapy or other types of medical conditions.

One of the biggest challenges for a women suffering from hair loss is the acceptance, then the strength to find a resource for answers. It is my hope that this information will guide you to some relief.

Today there are a large number of wig suppliers that are easy to access and shop on the internet. If you feel more comfortable ordering a wig on line, I’d highly recommend: www.mywigstore.com or www.hairuwear.com, these are two easy to use sites with a large selection of trendy wigs.

If you are in need of financial assistance or are just finding it tough to get some support you can always refer to the America Cancer Society, www.cancer.org, for helpful resources.

When choosing a type of wig, you should choose closest to your favorite hair color and style whichever reflects you. Most of the time hair loss is temporary due to chemo or postpartum alopecia, finding the positive in a negative will help you heal physically and spiritually.

Women who lose their hair due to chemo go through an enormous flood of emotions, and losing your hair is just another negative piece of the pie. So finding a great wig will allow you to gain back some self confidence and get you through the rough time. The good news is most of the time your hair will come back thicker and better than before.

If you prefer a more personal wig shopping experience then the best route would be to shop for a local salon that offers wig fittings and service and make an appointment with the hair additions specialist. This service is more readily available now than ever before.

How to Style
Naturally Curly Hair

If you have curly hair you know the challenges of caring and styling your hair to perfection. Most non-curly haired people always compliment our lovely locks in envy, little do they know the steps involved to our daily regimen.

Here are some tips from our top curly-hair professionals on how to style and manage your locks like a pro. Always remember that most naturally curly hair has a tendency to be dry, so shampooing daily is not a good idea.

Try to shampoo your hair as sparingly as possible, when you do wash your hair use moisture and emollient rich shampoos to infuse conditioning in the hair.

Second you should use an intensely rich moisturizing conditioner and do not use extremely hot water to rinse your hair, cooler water helps to seal the outer layer of your hair known as the cuticle, thus allowing for more reflection of light, which means less frizz and more shine.

Do not towel dry your naturally curly hair, blotting and squeezing the hair between a non-fuzzy towel works best, the less you manipulate the wet hair the more defined your curl pattern will be.

Always apply a pomade/Silk Nectar mixed with curling crème (by MaternitySalon hair care) as a defining curl cocktail. Allowing hair to air dry for a while allows the products to seal the cuticle even more, gently dry the root area with low heat and continue to scrunch hair, fast and furious heat and airflow will result in big, frizzy hair, slow and steady works best.

Always remember the products control the curl pattern, with the right serums and crèmes you will find amazing control and gorgeous locks.

Oh the joys
of pregnancy!
Now, how do you cope with
all the hormonal hair changes?

Is your hair thinning, lifeless, and dry? Are you suffering from a dry itchy scalp? Has your hair just lost its luster?

Pregnancy hormonal changes can definitely effect your hair, here are a few of my helpful tips to beat the hair dull drums.....

1   A simple product change or upgrade to a professional hair product can make a huge difference.
2   A clarifying scalp treatment and professional reconditioning treatment are a great fix.
3   Have your hair trimmed and ask for a clear glaze to add volume and shine.

Specific hair needs may be addressed by the right products. Always change and refresh your products, a clarifying shampoo is a must for a monthly treatment. Products can build up and hair loses luster.

No time or energy?
Try these fast and easy styling tips
for the BUSY MOM:
1   If you have fine/ limp hair you should use a light, volumizing mousse for lift. Blow dry hair upside down for volume, throw in a few hot rollers, spritz with hair spray, this gives incredible shine and fullness.
2   If you have curly hair you should use a non-sulfate shampoo and condition generously. Comb hair through with a wide tooth comb and with conditioner in it prior to rinsing. Never towel dry curly hair, just blot gently with a towel. Apply a rich emollient creme leave in moisturizer and allow hair to air dry. You can use a low temp and air flow blow dryer at the roots while scrunching hair. Spray with a styling spray to seal in shine and curl formation.
3   If you have straight/ long hair you should shampoo your hair in the evening, sleep with your hair in a pony tail, use a flatiron to smooth and redefine hair, use a drop of hair polish pomade to seal in the finish.

Choosing a Hairstyle
to Compliment Your Face Shape

The ideal face shape is oval, the general idea is to create an illusion of the 'ideal' face shape. During pregnancy women tend to retain fluid and swell especially the face, so here are a few tips to accentuate your face!!

Round- If your face is round ask for height and volume on top. Little or no volume at the sides; layer and textures work well.

Square- If you have a square shaped face opt for volume around the areas between the temples and jaw. Avoid severe lines, soft wispy styles work well.

Triangular- If your face is triangular look for a style with volume at the temples, some height on top; a soft fringe works well, avoid a bob style.

Oblong- If your face shape is oblong look for a style that is flattering on top. Hair should not be worn too long. Chin length is more desirable.

Diamond- If your face is diamond shaped opt for fullness at the forehead and jawline; avoid styles that lift away from the cheekbones.

Haircut 101-

How many times have you gotten a NEW haircut? Only to
leave the salon disappointed or in tears..?

Here's my fool proof haircut tip for 9 months of maternity hair bliss!!!

You want to look your best during pregnancy, so don't go for a radical haircut based on hormonal mood swings. Believe me, I've been there, done that!! So remember, always stick with what works. I recommend after all my professional experiences to ask for a "tweaked" or "updated" version of your favorite pre-pregnancy hair style. Why? You may ask.

Simply because pregnancy hormones amplify your emotions and a spontaneous decision for a quick fix may result in "bad" hair. Not what you need on your maternity journey. Trust me, when I say, don't go radical, don't go short if you always had long hair and don't get a blunt cut if your face is swollen.

Opt for a re-shaping of your favorite cut and add a few gorgeous hi-lites!

Wigs and Hair Extensions

Since the beginning of time wigs have played an important role in the world of beauty. Specialist and hair extension experts are readily found and the choices of products are endless. Hair enhancements can help get you through a difficult time when your hair just isn’t cooperating. By difficult time that could also apply to those going through intense chemotherapy from cancer or just the after effects of some type of illness. Here are some great tips when shopping for wigs or extensions.

1

Wigs are available in “Human Hair” or “Synthetic Hair” these are the differences: Human hair is usually more realistic, requires the same cleansing and styling as natural hair, there is greater durability. The disadvantages are human hair reacts to all climate change as natural hair does, the hair needs to be styled after each shampoo, color will fade and hair will break and damage from wear and tear.

2   Synthetic Hair is usually realistic and hard to spot, they are a great value and less expensive, they do not need restyling after cleaning, they do not frizz or flatten, synthetic wigs come in array of colors and styles. they do not fade and last much longer than human hair. The disadvantages are if you have fine hair a synthetic wig may be too dense and thick and look unnatural, hair coloring a synthetic wig is not a good idea, and a synthetic wig can not withstand extreme heat from styling tools.
3   Quality and cost of different wigs: Usually the old cliché “You get what you pay for” stands true when purchasing a wig, here are a few key factors to consider. Wigs are usually made of three different types of hair, European which is top of the line, hair from Asia and India which is middle of the road and human and mixed animal hair (yes animal) mostly yak, angora, horse and sheep and is the least expensive. And then you have your selection of synthetic wigs which are made of man made materials.
4   Hair Extensions and hairpieces also come in natural hair and synthetic materials. They can be applied in a number of different ways vary in price. Remember to always ask about the maintenance requirement of different extension applications; they vary from minimal to high maintenance and cost.

Bonded extensions-hair wefts or tracks of hair are attached with an adhesive against the root line by the scalp-generally lasting 2-4 weeks before maintenance is needed.

Track/sew in extensions-hair wefts are attached to a cornrow (a narrow row of a braid tight to the scalp) with a sew in method with a blunt rounded custom designed needle. Maintenance is usually dependant on your hair type, this procedure works well with coarse, strong hair.

Fusion extensions- hot or cold are attached in small sections close to the root with a special tool, maintenance depends on your hair type, and these extensions are usually costly.

To find these types of wigs and hair extensions you can ask your local stylist or local beauty supply store. Better yet, check out some online stores and search. As with all professional salon services, shop around, be an educated consumer, because remember you are worth it!

Hair Loss
During the normal course of our daily life we all lose hair every day, this is a normal cycle. But when we are afflicted with excess hair loss it can be emotionally impacting.

Over 62 million people in the U.S. deal with abnormal hair loss, formally called (alopecia). As a professional stylist and educator I am usually the first to notice and diagnose the problem. The medical community does not seem to recognize hair loss as a medical condition, but the stress and fear felt by those who suffer is very real.

Pregnancy all too often a culprit in “postpartum alopecia” is usually caused by hormonal fluctuations and can vary from minimal hair loss to large patches of hair falling out up to 9 months after delivery. Some women experience little or no change, it varies by individual. The good news is, I have found and used numerous solutions to get my clients through these tough times.

Hair loss is particularly devastating to women, they want to hide it from everyone, and let’s face it we all want and need to feel good about ourselves. I particularly recall a client who suffered such devastating hair loss with each of her three (yes, three) pregnancies, she was a lovely, upbeat women, but as soon as she delivered her babies the trauma
would begin.

As a professional and a mom myself I felt her pain, I immediately compiled a fix-it plan for her hair. First I recommended a combination of hair extensions that I strategically placed throughout her scalp with a subtle variety of tones to look naturally hilted. Then I selected a group of “clip-on” extensions she could throw in at home anytime. These work great! They are available in all lengths, colors and even pre-curled or set. With these tools a great base hair color and regular visits her hair solely recovered each time. The right professional products also have a great deal of effect on a quick recovery for hair loss.

Hair loss is caused by a number of reasons, another client went through chemo while she was pregnant, and needless to say she suffered severe hair loss. This is a common situation I have encountered and have had great success helping my clients look good and feel better. Along with fabulous extensions of many types, colors, textures, and brands there are beautiful wigs in a ton of gorgeous styles available to everyone. Don’t be afraid to ask your professional salon for recommendations, you deserve to look great and there are a number of solutions out there and remember hair loss after pregnancy is usually temporary.
